Cystoscopy Procedure: Testing It Out Down the Tubes
At Coyle Institute, we know that, as many women age, they experience pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, and other symptoms indicative of pelvic floor disorders that can limit their lives and cause them not only great discomfort, but also great embarrassment if left untreated. Not every symptom is clear-cut, however, and can require a more in-depth method of testing than traditional X-rays or blood tests to properly diagnose. For cases such as these, the cystoscopy procedure has been proven for its accuracy, providing doctors with a level of visibility and accessibility that would have once necessitated an open incision.
Cystoscopy Uses
Most specifically used to diagnose conditions in the urinary tract and kidneys, the cystoscopy procedure is a minimally invasive method of navigating through the internal systems of the body, using thin, lighted tubing that has been inserted through the urethra and fed up into the bladder, where a microscopic camera provides a clear view of these areas that can aid the doctor in making their diagnosis.
In addition to its obvious advantages in pinpointing a diagnosis, the cystoscopy procedure can be utilized to perform a number of other functions, including:
- The collection of urine and tissue samples
- Removal of any foreign objects within the urinary tract
- Insertion of stents, which aid in the flow of urine from kidney to bladder
- Remove small stones or other growths
- Stop bleeding in the bladder
- Injection of dyes that are used in special X-rays of the ureter and kidneys
Test Performance
At Coyle Institute, Dr. Michael Coyle and his staff have years of experience in diagnosing even the most severe feminine health conditions. Performing the cystoscopy procedure will help provide us with the greatest accuracy as we work with our patients to determine the best solutions for their health and advise them on their treatment options.
Though the test itself requires no lengthy recovery time and can be done in-office without admittance to a hospital, the cystoscopy procedure must be properly prepared for in advance and will require the use of a local, general, or spinal anesthetic, depending on the client’s specific needs. The patient will also be instructed to fully empty their bladder immediately prior to the test in order to reduce the risk of developing a urinary tract infection.
As we work with our clients to diagnose and treat complications within their urinary system, the team at Coyle Institute will discuss each step of the procedure, so that any questions and concerns can be given proper attention. We want the women in our care to be confident in our dedication to their well-being as well as in the extent of our expertise. Their trust and peace of mind is crucial in our ability to treat them as they take the next steps in reaching a life free from the pain and embarrassment they’ve been suffering.
